Important Parking Lot Safety Information

Dear Lumberton Parents and Guardians,

With school in session well into the first marking period, now is a good time to send a reminder about parking lot driving etiquette. Recently concerns have arisen about children’s safety in the school parking lots. Many vehicles that are dropping off and picking up students are not paying attention to basic safety, courtesy, and traffic laws. The district is working with the Lumberton Police Department to ensure that parents follow traffic laws and parking lot safety rules when driving on district property, especially during school arrival and dismissal times. During this school year, township police will be regularly stationing themselves in school parking lots to monitor drivers. They may issue warnings or citations to those who do not follow approved traffic patterns or who drive at excessive rates of speed. Each school has communicated the appropriate traffic pattern to follow when dropping off or picking up children; please follow these rules and be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles at all times. The safety of our students, staff members, and visitors is everyone’s responsibility and only by working together can we ensure that those who come to our schools can do so without risk or harm.

Thank you,

Lumberton Township School District

School Closing Make-Up Information

Dear Lumberton Parents and Guardians,

Today (Tuesday, October 24), the district made the decision to close schools due to a power failure at the Lumberton Middle School/Bobby’s Run School complex. This decision had to be made within minutes of receiving word that both schools had no power. The district opted to close school, rather than call a two-hour delay, because PSE&G could not guarantee when power would be restored.

Each school in the district has in-place an emergency generator, which provides ancillary power to keep the building safe and minimally operational. The generators do not restore full power to the buildings.

Power was restored by PSE&G around 10:30 a.m. The power outage was caused by high winds and falling tree limbs, which subsequently downed power lines in the area. Today’s missed day will be made up on Friday, May 25, which is one of two inclement weather days built into the calendar.

Tomorrow’s full day of school will be Day 4, as planned. The district has revised the way a cycle day is made up. Traditionally, Lumberton schools carried a missed cycle day over to the next available school day. However, beginning this year, the make-up school day will become the missed cycle day. Today was supposed to be Day 3, therefore, May 25 will be Day 3. After any make-up days, the district will continue following normally-scheduled cycle days.

We apologize for any inconvenience today’s closing caused; however, the safety of our students and staff always comes first.

Thank you,

Lumberton Township School District
