GT-3 Cell Phone Recycling Project

Dear Lumberton Parents and Guardians,

Ashbrook Elementary’s GT-3 class needs your help! GT-3 is participating in a “reduce waste” program and will be visiting the Philadelphia Zoo as part of the “Unless Project” on February 21st. The class would like to collect as many used cell phones as possible to take with them to help in the zoo’s efforts to save endangered gorillas.

How does recycling cell phone save endangered gorillas? Coltan is the mineral that is used to make cell phones and other small devices run faster and longer, and 80% of the world’s supply of coltan is found in prime gorilla habitat. However, the mining of coltan is destroying that habitat. In order to mine coltan, miners have to cut down trees, dig up the earth all around and filter through the coltan that they need, so gorillas are forced to flee their homes in hopes of finding a safe place that hasn’t already been destroyed by miners.

Recycling old mobile phones helps reduce the demand for coltan and protects gorilla habitat in Africa. If you have a cell phone in a junk drawer in your house, stationed somewhere in the garage collecting dust, or even if the kids are using it as a toy, send it in to the main office of your child’s school by Wednesday, February 20th and the GT-3 class will gladly take it off of your hands!

Guidance for Furloughed Employees

Dear Lumberton Parents and Guardians,

For parents on furlough or not receiving a salary: this IS considered a change of economic circumstances and you may reapply for free/reduced breakfast and lunch for your student. A student’s status will remain confidential. Please fill out the ATTACHED FORM and turn it in to the main office of the school your child attends.

Please remember, once eligibility is determined, the eligibility determination stays in affect for the remainder of the school year. The household may request to return to a previous eligibility when the household recovers financially but is not required to do so. However, if you are selected for verification later in the school year, you will be required to produce documentation of actual income for the application month.

Thank you,

LMS Pick up and Drop off Procedures Reminder

Hello Lumberton Families,

I hope all is going well with you during this busy time of year. The reason for my email today is to ask for your help. As you know, we changed our drop off and pick up procedures this year with regards to cars and busses. This has worked out quite well, but we are having a bit of an issue in the morning. If you drop a student off, we are asking you to pull up towards the main entrance to the school as far as you can. If cars pull up, we can get about eight cars dropping students off. Unfortunately, many people have been stopping about halfway, limiting the number of cars that can pull up to the curb. This has caused some cars to back up. In addition, some cars are then passing cars to pull up further, which has led to some close calls with accidents. This can all be alleviated if you pull up to the main entrance. Our reason for the change in the first place was to make this process as safe as possible and we fell we have found the best option for this purpose.

In addition, as you look to exit the parking lot, please remember to yield to the cars entering the parking lot at the Bobby’s Run Entrance.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Mr. Wrigley

So Happy App!

Sodexo has some exciting news….it’s their new app, “So Happy”. So Happy is linked to each school’s breakfast and lunch menus. It contains nutritional information and indicates allergens associated with every item found on each menu.

To download the free app, visit the App Store or Google Play Store and search “So Happy.” Then choose a school or multiple schools to gain access to the specific menu planned for that school. You will have the option of selecting your allergies, and if you do so, that allergen will be highlighted in red next to the menu item it is found in, warning you not to choose this item.

Student Lunch PINs / SchoolCafe Accounts

Dear Lumberton Parents and Guardians,

Student and Staff Lunch PINS/Setting up SchoolCafe Account

Lunch PINS are the last 5 digits of student/staff school ID (found in Genesis).

For households with students in more than one district:  At this time, you will not be able to add students in different DISTRICTS to the same account.  If you already have a SchoolCafe account with a student in another district (such as RV) you will have to set up a second SchoolCafe account using a different email address. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.  You CAN use the same account for siblings in different schools within Lumberton Township School District (Walther, Ashbrook, Bobby’s Run, Middle).

Payment Maximum Limit:  There is a maximum limit of $100 per transaction.  If you have multiple students within the district, you must stay below the $100 when totaling up each child’s payment OR make separate transactions.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact me directly.

New Cafeteria Payment System SchoolCafe

Dear Lumberton Parents and Guaridans:

You will need to create a new account in SchoolCafe. SchoolCafe can be accessed through any computer at https://www.schoolcafe.com or you can download the SchoolCafe app on your mobile device simply by searching for SchoolCafe in the Apple Store or Google Play. The Lumberton Township School District website has also been updated with the link to SchoolCafe. It can be found under the Food Service Information section of our homepage. Once your account is established, you will be able to view your child’s current account balance and make payments.

Please check our website for further information regarding the School Lunch Program (https://www.lumberton.k12.nj.us). We hope that this will be a smooth transition for everyone.

2018-2019 Calendar

The 2018-2019 calendar was approved at last night’s Board of Education meeting and can be found HERE.

INCLEMENT WEATHER/EMERGENCY CLOSINGS: We are now into the winter season, and it is important for everyone to be prepared for emergency closings. These are most often caused by weather, but can also occur when a boiler breaks or similar mechanical failure happens. Please have a plan in place for your children should the need for an emergency/early closing occur.

In the event of the need for an emergency closing, the district utilizes an automated phone calling system, Blackboard Connect. For delayed openings and before-school closings, Blackboard Connect will call ONLY the HOME NUMBER listed in our database to confirm that school is closed or delayed.

Always verify closings through the Lumberton School District Website: www.lumberton.k12.nj.us or RVTV Comcast Channel 19/FiOS Channel 40. Emergency closings are also broadcast on standard news outlets between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. Lumberton’s Emergency Closing Number is 702. In the event of an emergency early closure, Blackboard Connect will dial THREE numbers in the following order as applicable: home, mom’s cell, dad’s cell.

No Place for Hate

Lumberton Schools have applied to become a No Place for Hate District for the 2017-2018 school year.  This includes: FLW, AES, BRS and LMS.  We are thrilled to have this opportunity to become a part of this organization.  These activities will promote respect through active learning projects that address bullying and hatred that will lead to a more positive school climate.

During the year, each school will have a minimum of 3 activities that celebrate diversity and respect as well as address bias and bullying.  Each school will have a kick-off for the year to discuss the program goals.  Students will sign and become familiar with the No Place for Hate Promise.  More information will be distributed to parents, students and staff throughout the year.  Please contact Kim Pease at kpease@lumberton.k12.nj.us with any questions regarding the program.
