Programs and Services
The Lumberton Township School District ensures that all students with disabilities who need special education and related services are located, identified and evaluated as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504. The district offers comprehensive special education programs and services for students, ages three years and older, with disabilities. Placement in any special education program is determined by the IEP team and is based on the least restrictive environment (LRE) appropriate for the student. These programs and services include:
Speech and Language Services: Individual, small group or integrated therapy intervention to address articulation and language development disorders.
In-Class Resource Program (ICR)-also commonly known as Inclusion
This is a program in which the student receives instruction within the general education classroom from both a general education teacher and a special education teacher, as specified within the student’s IEP. The student shall be provided modifications to the instructional strategies or testing procedures, or other specialized instruction, to access the general education curriculum in accordance with the student's IEP. The general education teacher shall have primary instructional responsibility for the student in an in-class resource program unless otherwise specified in the student's IEP.
Pull-Out Resource (POR) Program
The Pull-Out Resource Program is offered to students who experience significant difficulty with the rigor, pace and/or structure of general education academic subjects. Small group instruction is provided outside of the general education classroom by special education teachers who modify the general curriculum to meet the individual needs of students. Efforts are made to transition students into general education classes by teaching compensatory skills and strategies.
Self-Contained Programming: Learning and Language Disability (LLD) Program
The LLD Program is a self-contained program designed to provide greater academic and social support in the core academic subjects using a modified curriculum guide. The curriculum is presented to students through specialized instructional strategies with an emphasis on language-based instruction. All LLD classes are staffed by certified Special Education Teachers.
Self-Contained Emotional Regulation Impairment (ERI) Program
The Emotional Regulation Impairment (ERI) Program uses positive behavioral supports to increase positive behaviors and decrease negative behaviors of students with behavioral and/or emotional disabilities. Skills are actively taught to students in both formal and informal settings and are modeled by classroom staff. Students are given opportunities to practice skills and receive reinforcement.
Self-Contained Multiple Disabilities (MD) Program
The Multiple Disabilities (MD) Program is a self contained program for students who learn in different ways. Instruction is provided with a modified grade level curriculum. This program focuses on both academic and functional-based programming for students to assist them in developing independence in the educational setting.
The Child Study Team, along with parents, teachers, and other staff members, determines a student’s eligibility for special education and related services. A request to initiate a referral for evaluation can be submitted in writing by the teaching staff and/or parents to the school administration and/or the Supervisor of Special Education.
Each school provides intervention and pre-referral services through the Student Success Team I&RS. A request to initiate a referral for evaluation can be submitted in writing by the teaching staff and/or parents to the school administration and/or the Supervisor of Special Education, however this eliminates the crucial step of allowing pre-intervention strategies to be implemented prior to a referral by the Office of Special Education. There are also Early Intervention programs and other services available in the community for children younger than three years of age with disabilities.
